Danny Murphy has spoken of his desire to put behind him the disappointment of last season, impress new boss Rafael Benitez and win himself an extended Liverpool contract.
Murphy admits last season was a 'miserable' one for him personally and he's determined to make up for it in the coming campaign. The arrival of Benitez has given the club a huge lift and the midfielder wants be part of what he believes can be an exciting Anfield future. He says: "I've two years left but it's one in effect. By the end of the season I'll know if the manager fancies me and whether they're going to offer me a new deal. "You've got to perform to keep your contract going and to stay at Liverpool - which is where I want to be. "I don't want to go through last season again where I only started 28 or 29 games. The year before I started 49 or 50. That's what you want. "Mentally, I don't think I could do that again. It doesn't just affect your football, it affects your home life. You're just miserable all the time. "I felt a little bit hard done by and thought I should have been playing more games than I did. "I don't think I did that much wrong. The new manager is going to have certain ideas but he has given everyone a fair chance in training and in pre-season matches. "I'm feeling as fit and strong as I did going into the season two years ago. You just want to stay clear of injuries. "I had a minor ankle problem last season that kept me out for the first four or five weeks. It set me back and you never quite catch up. "That's not a nice place to be so I want to make sure that doesn't happen and it's up to me."
